I fell in love with Japan and Japanese culture back when I was a kid after discovering anime and video games for the first time.
Japan always felt like a wondrous, mysterious and exotic land completely different to what I’d grown up experiencing here in the west. I wanted to be a part of its fascinating culture. Being an artist by trade, I felt compelled to finally create my ultimate Japanese-inspired artwork.
I’d created stylised anime and manga art before, but this time I wanted to try pushing my abilities to their limit. The goal was to produce something serious, classy, simple, yet detailed. An image of a Geisha that people couldn’t help but stop and take notice of.
But could I pull it off? I call myself a professional, but when it comes down to starting a new piece of art, stress starts to build up. I’ll sit down in front of a blank canvas, palms sweating and my mind racing as I think about all the other artists out there who are so much better than me and I never know if I’ll create something to meet my high expectations.
In fact, I remember 10 years ago when I’d just started working as a tattoo artist. A customer requested a custom Geisha tattoo design. I didn’t do it. For some reason, I was too scared I’d mess it up or not be able to deliver. So instead, I just worked on small tattoos and writing for the first few years of my previous career as a tattooist. This is another reason why I wanted to finally nail this piece of artwork, proving I could do it justice.
Despite my huge concerns, I wasn’t going to postpone this art goal any longer.
I’d been patiently working on my artistic skill-set for years and the perseverance had recently been paying off. More and more people had become interested in buying my artwork to hang on their walls, which gave me a much-appreciated confidence boost. I wasn’t ready to let down these customers by going on to produce half-hearted art, or no art at all.
To start, I spent several solid hours gathering reference material until the heat from my laptop felt like it was melting my legs! I collected images of flowers, photos of people, traditional Japanese wood block prints and a load of stuff I’d never end up using in the final artwork.
I listened to exciting Japanese movie soundtracks by composers Taro Iwashiro and Naoki Sato as I immersed myself in ideas and then started to plan out the composition.
Slowly, I built up the artwork day after day. Starting with the initial line drawing. Then filling in colors before each part of the image was carefully rendered with shading and tone.
I was in a state of flow- working on the artwork from the moment I woke up until bed time.
However, three days in and I woke up with a head ache, which soon developed into the world’s worst migraine. I didn’t have a choice but to break my flow and stop everything. I’d lay down on my bed, lights-off, enduring what felt like a stream-roller slowly crushing my brain. I was nauseous. If I made any sudden movements, I’d end up throwing up. Not fun!
I lost an entire day to illness, but was determined to still finish the artwork before the end of the week. Thankfully, the next day I felt well enough to resume working. I powered through to finally finish it after nearly 40 hours.
I did it! It looked awesome. One of those few times where I had a vision of what I wanted to achieve and actually went on to make it happen. I immediately took a photo and sent it to a few of my close friends, stating – “I think this could be my finest artwork yet”. They agreed. I was ready to share it with a wider audience and a few days later, I made it available to buy as art and canvas prints on my online store. I can’t wait to exhibit it at live art shows in the future.
I’ve still never visited Japan and I hope to tour Asia someday. Until then, I’m happy to at least share my love for such a fascinating country; capturing a hint of its beauty, history, art and culture through this piece of artwork.
