When it comes to tattoo designs, I like to draw darker, gothic themes or manga and comic styles. Honestly, I became a tattoo artist for the excuse to make cool drawings all day and get paid for it. I’ve been designing tattoos for almost 11 years now. I’ll take on any request. But I get super excited when a customer asks for something on the topic of comic books, video games, manga, sci-fi or horror etc.
When someone asks for a style or theme I have no interest in, I’ll often internally think something along the lines of, “Seriously? This idea sounds bad or vague and yet I’m expected to perform a miracle and turn it into something amazing? This’ll be 10-15 hours of my professional life, drawing something that I really don’t care about.”
It can be a tough job in many ways, but at the end of the day, I’m a professional. One who does his best to keep standards high and maintain a solid reputation. And so, I do what needs to be done. Plus, I want to make sure the client is happy. After all, having a design permanently etched on your skin is something you should always feel 100% happy about.
This guy came into my tattoo studio a little while ago, a rail network engineer in his late 20s. He asked for a full sleeve tattoo. Although he didn’t know exactly what he wanted. Just a suggestion of World War 1 and 2 memorial themes. No doubt to pay homage to the lives who fought and died to protect our way of life?
I began work on the top half. Deciding to represent lives lost with a skeleton soldier, and including elements such as the red poppies (the British memorial flower from WW1) and the WW2 English Spitfire. It started coming together nicely.
At first, I thought a custom piece like this might take around 10 hours to assemble the reference material and paint each part by hand. It took 30 hours. It’s not uncommon for full sleeves or a big back piece to take 30 hours or more to design from scratch. Other than a small deposit paid, this is unpaid labor. A tattoo artists’ hourly rate later kicks-in on the day of making it permanent.
In an ideal world, 100% of clients would come back week after week without fail until their tattoo project is complete. Big projects can take a dozen sittings to complete. Occasionally, though, disaster strikes. Perhaps the client loses their job, has health problems, new financial commitments like having a kid or moving out of the area and you never see them again.
Unfortunately, the gentleman in question commissioned his sleeve right before 2020. With the pandemic and social upheaval at the time, this threatened to be another case of lost art. Things went quiet. I didn’t know what to do for the best. Over the last decade of tattooing, this wouldn’t be the first time working 30+ hours on a custom design without earning from it. Additionally, the design phase is often where my heart and soul becomes most invested in the project. Creating artwork that never even sees the light of day is quite frustrating and expensive.
So, I went online. I selected my best designs and offered them for sale as paper or canvas prints. They started selling! I sold over 50 prints of this one design, even before this gentleman had completed his 10 sessions of tattooing.
Fortunately, the internet means I’ve been able to share my passionately-created artwork with countless people, and this is becoming one of my best ever selling works! I went from working 1-to-1 as a tattoo artist in the South East of England, where a customer not returning as agreed might cost me a week’s wages, to now sharing my art with the entire world. With customers now ordering from the US, Canada, France, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Norway, Finland, and many more!
I now know that if I devote myself to making good art, it will always get seen, sold and appreciated by a wide audience. I am safe as an artist. No matter the circumstances, my fate is no longer determined by a single stranger. And amazing people like you, help me continue to be able to create unlimited art without ever having to worry about whether someone will come be back for their next session!
