When I was around 10 years old, I decided that I wanted to become an artist. I’d attempt to draw the covers from videogames or band albums or make up my own characters; robots, monsters, aliens; typical boy stuff. My drawing ability wasn’t bad for my age but to be honest, I was nowhere near the awesomeness I’d see on album covers from the likes of Iron Maiden or Mega Death.
I wanted to at least be near that level. So, I practiced all the time- at school I’d always be doodling in my notebooks, or at weekends trying to draw something cool to impress my friends. I had fun, at first.
But after years of practicing, I was still miles away from a professional level. I never found it easy to learn to draw. In fact, I remember being around 16, failing yet again to draw to a standard I could be proud of. My stomach sank as I realised I was never going to get good enough. Despite pouring so many hours into the whole ‘learning to draw’ thing, it just wasn’t working out. I’d see people in my class getting straight As or being scouted for sports teams and felt I had something to prove. But I was just a wannabe artist who couldn’t draw!
Some people might call it grit, or just plain stubbornness, but I persevered anyway.
I was in my late teens and got my first art commission; a rock band album cover. It took a week to complete, yet I only got paid peanuts. But it was something! A stranger actually thought my work was good enough to pay money for!
Throughout my 20s, slowly but surely my skills improved and I began getting more work. Proper work! I was commissioned to create art professionally for books, magazines, video games, and more recently began working as a tattoo artist.
Being a tattoo artist comes with its own set of problems- customers wanting uninspiring designs, not turning up for appointments or going awol half-way through a 10-session project. And so, I began selling my work online on canvas and paper art prints. I had no idea if my art with a skull, crow and roses would resonate with a wider audience, but to my surprise, this one piece went on to sell over 85 prints!
I’d considered quitting the art game so many times. I’m glad I didn’t. It’s taken a while but I’m now at a point where, not only am I able to draw the kind of artwork I’m passionate about, but there are awesome people out there who support my artistic endeavours. It means so much to me- even if they don’t realise it and just want a nice piece of artwork to hang on their walls.
