Queen of the Dead Art available on paper, stretched canvas, luxury metal or acrylic. Multiple sizes available with free shipping!
Originally, I’d been commissioned to create a sleeve tattoo to celebrate themes of life and death. The customer and I agreed a sugar skull girl would work great as a part of it.
Despite the whole theme being considered somewhat morbid, the topic of death is something I’d given a lot of thought to over the years. I’ve now come to believe it’s something to be faced rather than feared. In fact, the Mexican Day of the Dead festival celebrates death in order to remember those we’ve lost and to help find peace and acceptance in their passing.
As so, I set to work on creating a design fit for a queen.
I wanted the girl to be beautiful, feminine, delicate, yet confident. I tried to capture this in the first draft, but I hit a barrier- it wasn’t working. The face wasn’t quite hitting the mark, and the contrast between light and dark tones didn’t pop. I continued working on it, but it seemed like the more time I spent, the more mess I’d create. I was getting agitated. I could feel my body temperature rise and panic began to set in as I’d get more and more frustrated with the piece. Had I forgotten how to draw? What was I supposed to tell the customer who was patiently waiting for a design?
Giving up on it wasn’t an option. I took a break, spent some time with my friends and came back to it the next day. I began working on a completely new draft and, thankfully, I felt something click into place. Maybe it was just the nice weather that day, or the fact I’d gotten more sleep the night before, but I was able to finish the design more or less without a struggle. I was relieved!
I showed the customer, who loved the design and it was made permanent as a part of their tattoo. Job done!
Although it seemed a shame not to share the artwork with a wider audience. So, I went on to refine the art further, making it suitable to sell as art prints and canvases- similar to two other pieces I have for sale in my online galleries (Medusa and Sugar skull Moth girl). Despite the initial stresses at the beginning, the perseverance paid off. I’m pleased to be able to offer it to customers around the world to hang on their walls. A reminder that while death is not necessarily something to look forward to, it can remind us to fondly remember those who have passed on and to make the most of the life we have.
