Description
Having been a huge fan of ancient mythologies, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to paint one of the most famous monsters of them all. Her story is surprisingly tragic.
Legend has it that Medusa was one of three sisters and a priestess of the Greek goddess Athena. She was known for her beauty. Thousands would travel to Athena’s Temple just for the chance to gaze at her exquisite beauty. Some said her gorgeous and gleaming hair rivalled Athena’s herself.
It wasn’t long before Athena became jealous of Medusa.
Athena’s enemy, the god Poseidon, too became enamoured with Medusa. His advances were denied as Medusa stayed loyal to her vow of celibacy as a priestess. Eventually, Poseidon grew tired of rejection and decided he would take Medusa by force. Medusa ran back to the temple. In the hopes of seeking protection. It was futile. Poseidon had his way with Medusa.
Shortly after, Athena appeared. Shocked and enraged at the act which had taken place, she decides to solely punish Medusa, as punishment against a god was unthinkable. She cursed Medusa for breaking her vow of celibacy- turning her hair into a head of venomous snakes and anyone who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone.
In time, word spread of the monster she had become. Warriors wished to add her head to their list of trophies. However, they all shared the same fate and turned to stone.
I wanted to capture both Medusa’s beauty and danger while hinting of her forgotten, tragic past. While there are thousands of mythological creatures that exist, Medusa is one of the most famous. Known throughout the world. A symbol of beauty, horror and an example of surviving, even through such misfortune and adversity.
