Growing up, I loved cartoons, manga, video games and all that nerdy stuff. My dream was to become part of that whole industry. To make my own creations and share my passion.
Some kids got lucky and were born with tons of artistic talent. I didn’t. Learning to draw didn’t come naturally, and I often found the process quite stressful.
As I practiced improving, I would receive praise from my childhood peers and family. I had fun drawing, but I was never happy with the results. I felt like a fraud sometimes, wanting to give up constantly, when my art didn’t turn out the way I’d envisioned.
Additionally, I developed an odd phobia around the subject of death, and this got quite severe at times, preventing me from creating art when it got bad.
But I never gave up. My passion for the various characters in cartoons and films was intense. My love for the aesthetic beauty of both western comics and Japanese anime styles drove me to continue my artistic journey.
There was a certain edge to the Japanese manga of the 1990s that fascinated me and I was determined to become a professional. I persisted through all the pain of inadequacy until I eventually got good at drawing. It was emotionally brutal at times. I felt like if I couldn’t get it right, that I’d never get there. And yet, I never gave up.
It took 10 years of relentless practice and repetition to get to the point where a stranger commissioned me to create my very first paid artwork!
I’ll never forget the feeling. A total stranger contacted me via email asking for a custom piece. I blinked, barely able to believe my eyes. But there it was, in black and white text. Offering me adult money for something I’d spent the last 10-12 years doing as a hobby. It was a true rite of passage, a core memory, of becoming a man. I was only 18 at the time.
The request came from a band. They wanted an album cover custom-designed and offered me what felt like a huge sum of money at the time.
I sat there, at my home computer in my bedroom, just staring at the screen and the black and white text. My brain at that moment seemed to drown out the music I had playing at the time and the world went silent. My hand on the mouse and the other on the keyboard were the only things keeping the world real to me, everything else was a blur.
There was massive pressure involved. Before, I was just working to make something beautiful. Now, I had to do that AND please someone else at the same time. What if they didn’t like it? What if they hated it? What if I wasn’t good enough? What if this whole fantasy of becoming a professional artist was some delusion I’d indulged myself in for too long, and I’d finally get found out?
It took a solid 25 hours, working on it every day after school. After about a week, I submitted my artwork. I was so proud and excited to show them what I’d killed myself to create for them.
When I got their response, I was devastated. They didn’t even like it. My stomach sunk. It was at that point when I knew my art career was over. What was I even thinking? I wasn’t a professional, I was just a wannabe…
But I never gave up. Something deep inside of me kept pushing and decided to revise the piece completely, in alignment with their request. It took all I had to create the 2nd version. I had put everything into the first version and in my opinion, it was done right. I was right! But I pushed through this voice in my head and completed the 2nd version no matter how distraught I was.
I brought the 2nd completed version back to the band, and they loved it! They declared my project a success and they paid me in full! It was the first time I’d ever been paid for my artwork by a total stranger. It was a huge emotional moment for me.
I felt like I’d stepped across the threshold and was now a professional artist… and even more importantly, I was now a man.
I’ve continued to work as an artist for decades, authoring several best-selling how to draw books, and more recently working as a Tattoo artist for over 11 years. I want to continue to be of service to my customers, offering them beautiful artwork they can enjoy in their homes.
