They say one should never judge a book by its cover, and I totally agree. But I can’t deny that I love a good cover! As a kid, I’d buy comics or manga more for their artwork than for the story. Or I’d buy a music album or video game solely based on the cover art. I loved art. It inspired me and made me want to create my own illustrations based on all the nerdy stuff I loved whilst growing up.
The trouble was, I wasn’t gifted with any natural talent. So, throughout my teen years I’d practice all the time, trying to get close to an ability level I felt happy with. I began to improve but something was missing. I was around the age of 17 or 18 when I discovered Photoshop and digital software. I thought- this is it! I now have a tool which will grant me the ability to create art like the pros!
Soon I realised this tool wouldn’t do the work for me and I had no idea how to use it!
I was no artistic prodigy, but I was good at grinding away in an attempt to learn things. So, I went on to figure out how to use Photoshop. After several months, I was producing pretty decent digital art. And after several years, I got good enough to publish a book teaching how to create characters using Photoshop.
Deep down, however, I felt like a fraud. I’d spent so much time using software to help me. Was I actually any good at creating art without using Photoshop as a crutch?
I attempted a few doodles and quick sketches onto paper and it felt like my fears were warranted. I couldn’t produce anything I was happy with. I didn’t have the familiarity of Photoshop and its all-important ‘Undo’ feature for when mistakes happened. I felt like a failure, needing the computer to hold my hand whenever I sat down to draw.
To deal with the stress, I took some time away from the whole art thing. Then I came back to it for a second shot. This time with the intention of drawing something worthy of hanging on my wall, as opposed to a sketch or doodle.
I’d always been a huge fan of sci-fi, comics and graffiti, so I set out to produce some art using traditional media for this genre. In this case- ink and marker pens. I wanted to focus on a girl’s face, giving her a gasmask, and adding in paint dribbles reminiscent of a graffiti-style wall painting. The beetles were added in, because, well, I love beetles! They’re fascinating creatures, and dare I say, cute? Especially lady bugs.
It finally came together!
I’d created art I’d be happy to put on my wall 🙂 I even went on to make the image available for others to buy as prints and canvases. Happily, people not only like it, but are buying it for their homes 🙂 I feel honoured that customers liked the work enough to own and hang it on their walls. Most importantly, it taught me that intention, focus and perseverance really are key when setting out to draw.
