I was born in the early 80s at around the same time as Nintendo’s Mario. I grew up on a diet of comic books, cartoons and video games as a kid. I’ve continued to consider myself a gamer ever since.

I was around 9 years old. My brother and I worked for months, cleaning neighbours’ cars or helping with odd jobs, until we finally saved up enough money to go halves on a Super Nintendo games console. It was then my love for Mario games really kicked in. Super Mario and the first ever Mario Kart game blew my mind! I’d clock up countless hours playing Mario until the early hours on a regular basis, until my thumbs were sore and my eyes were strained. I didn’t care! I always wanted to express my love for the games by creating some fan art.

There were a few problems. The first being, compared to action heroes of the late 80s or the new wave of exciting, stylistic anime characters appearing on screens for the first time, Mario as a character design wasn’t particularly exciting or fun- as a kid I’d rather be drawing flashy robot killing machines or designing super-powered heroes that could take down alien monsters with flair and style! The second being the sheer fact that I was a boy who’s drawing ability simply wasn’t good enough to fully illustrate the colourful, fun and vibrant world of Super Mario in the way I’d envisioned.

Despite my love for games, comic books and art in general, I never found it easy to draw. The amount of screwed up paper from inadequate, unfinished drawings on my childhood bedroom floor was enough to swim in! But my passion would help drive me through those stressful times of learning art and, somehow, eventually, I ended up getting good. Even becoming a professional artist!

Decades later, the Bowsette internet meme circulated the internet- Basically it was a ‘what if Mario’s nemesis- the dragon-like Bowser fused with Princess Peach?’ It was a fun, fan-created character which blew up on the internet. Before long it seemed like every game-loving artist was drawing her, or her ghostly counterpart- Boosette/Booette. It was finally time for me to create some Mario inspired artwork. I’d been wanting to try out a ‘Moe-anime’ style and felt Bowsette and Boosette would fit this nicely.

20 hours in to the artwork and I was struggling. I couldn’t quite get the colours to pop and it all looked dull and lifeless. I had such big hopes to create fun, vibrant artwork, but it wasn’t working. My stomach was sinking at the realisation that I’d wasted days working on a picture that I’d have to end up scrapping. It felt like being a teenager all over again- trying to draw, but not knowing how! I took a break. A few days later, I came back to it with a fresh set of eyes. The artwork didn’t look any better, but I continued working on it, pushing around pixels on my graphics tablet for a further 20 hours until, suddenly, it took shape.

I was finally pleased and so excited by the result that I decided to share it for sale as art prints and canvases on my website. For a character unknown outside the world of video games, it went on to sell unexpectedly well both online and at local conventions I’d attend. Most importantly, I got to share my passion for games, anime and artwork. I was so close to giving up this whole ‘learning to do art’ thing when I was younger, but sticking at it finally paid off. I get to create artwork I can be happy with and bring it to fellow gamers and anime fans all over the world.
